Making a retail product label? A free barcode generator creates the image. It does not issue registered product numbers. Obtain an assigned identifier through GS1 and confirm your retailer’s requirements.

Prepare your data for the free barcode generator

Illustration of an inventory identifier becoming a Code 128 label

Before using a free barcode generator, identify the field your inventory system searches: SKU, GTIN, serial number or logistics data. Create a record for SKU-000123, then encode that value as Code 128. Scanning can find the record; generating its image does not create a product listing or price.

Replace the sample data in this free barcode generator before making labels. Examples demonstrate syntax and are not assigned to your business. GS1-128 uses parenthesized application identifiers for fields such as GTIN, expiry date and lot. Plain Data Matrix here does not add GS1 identifiers.

Check the preview before you download

EAN-13 example with the calculated check digit highlighted

Try EAN-13 in the free barcode generator: 590123412345 receives check digit 7; 5901234123450 triggers an error. The completed number appears below the preview. Code 39 lowercase letters and spaces in retail numbers are rejected, helping you find source errors without silently changing the data.

Appearance settings in the free barcode generator control module scale, linear bar height and supported readable text. Scale changes PNG dimensions; height affects linear codes only. Download the original image instead of a screenshot. Preserve its proportions and the blank quiet zones around the pattern.

Build a batch without losing your identifiers

Illustration of spreadsheet columns and a batch of barcode files

Paste one value per line into the free barcode generator; a second tab-separated column adds display labels. For CSV/TSV, select the barcode and label columns. Disable the header option if row one contains an identifier. Quoted commas are preserved, blank pasted lines ignored, and other characters retained.

The free barcode generator preserves identifiers such as 000123 but cannot restore digits lost in a spreadsheet. Check scientific notation and empty cells. Make sequence combines a prefix, start and quantity: ASSET- with 000001 and 50 produces ASSET-000001 through ASSET-000050, preserving zero padding.

This free barcode generator previews up to 12 rows and validates every row on export. An invalid value stops the batch and identifies its row. ZIP filenames include row numbers to prevent duplicate identifiers overwriting files. Check the archive count against your source; progress and cancellation remain available.

Move from a barcode image to a printable label

Illustration of a 21-label sheet and an individual barcode label

Choose Print labels / PDF in the free barcode generator. A4 has 21 labels in a 3 × 7 grid, each 63.5 × 38.1 mm; US Letter has 30 in a 3 × 10 grid, each 2⅝ × 1 inch. Thermal pages are 50 × 30 or 100 × 50 mm. Match your stock’s dimensions and margins.

To reuse a partly filled sheet, set Start at label in the free barcode generator. Copies of each repeats records. Three records with two copies, starting at A4 label 20, fill two positions on the first sheet and four on the next. Check the label and page totals.

Print the PDF from the free barcode generator at Actual size or 100%, with Fit to page off. Check alignment on one sheet, then scan into the intended system. Long values may need larger labels. Ink spread and label material affect results; an on-screen preview cannot certify printed output.

Free barcode generator FAQ

Is this free barcode generator really unlimited?

Yes. This free barcode generator has no account, watermark or row quota. All formats, batch downloads and label PDFs are included. Large exports depend on device memory; cancellation keeps your input.

Does generating a barcode give me a registered UPC or EAN?

No. This free barcode generator draws your number; it cannot register product identifiers. Use an assigned GS1 number for retail. A valid check digit proves neither ownership nor retailer acceptance. Internal SKUs may follow your own numbering system.

Which barcode type should I choose?

In this free barcode generator, choose Code 128 for internal stock, assigned UPC/EAN for retail, ITF-14 for cases or GS1-128 for structured logistics data. QR Code suits links; Data Matrix suits compact part labels. Check scanner compatibility first.

Can I make barcodes from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Paste spreadsheet columns into the free barcode generator or import CSV/TSV. Native XLSX is unsupported. Set identifiers to text before exporting your sheet to preserve leading zeros and long numbers.

Why does my EAN or UPC number fail validation?

The free barcode generator checks length, characters and check digits. EAN-13 accepts 12 or 13 digits; UPC-A accepts 11 or 12. Missing check digits are added; incorrect ones block export. Check the original record before changing any digit.

Should I download PNG, SVG or a label PDF?

Choose SVG in the free barcode generator for scalable artwork, PNG for documents, or ZIP for batches. Label PDFs include paper dimensions and positions, with barcode images rendered at a target of at least 300 pixels per printed inch.

Can I change the text without changing what a scanner reads?

Yes. The free barcode generator accepts encoded values and display labels in separate columns. Captions leave scanner data unchanged; some 2D formats omit them. Keep standard readable digits on retail labels unless your application permits alternatives.

Why does my printed barcode not scan?

Check scanner settings and print quality. A free barcode generator cannot compensate for stretched bars, cropped margins, glossy or damaged labels. Long values may need larger labels. Scan a sample into the receiving application.

Are my barcode values uploaded or saved?

No. The free barcode generator processes input locally and clears it on reload or close. Downloads remain in your chosen folder. Ordinary hosting requests exclude barcode values; there is no saved working data.

Will these barcodes expire or require a subscription later?

This free barcode generator exports static codes without service redirects or subscription checks. Encoded values stay unchanged, though a QR destination can change or disappear. Generate a replacement to change a printed code’s contents.
